2021 Kahawai
Year 7 & 8
CHallenge

This event has unfortunately been cancelled due to Covid restrictions
The 2021 Kahawai Year 7 and 8 Challenge– a new Canoe Racing NZ event to make up for the cancelled AIMS Games, designed to develop the next generation of paddlers – will be held on Saturday 6th November at Lake Okareka, Rotorua.
This event is open to all paddlers of intermediate school age (year 7 and 8), and is suitable for paddlers of all levels and from any paddling discipline (Sprint, surf, ocean, slalom or multisport).
All boats and equipment will be provided by organisers.
The focus of this event is being active and having fun with friends.
The Canoe Slalom North Island Intermediate Schools Championships is being held in Tauranga on Sunday 7th November, so the idea is that paddlers have the option to attend both events if they choose. This is a fun, safe and competitive event that is a great introduction to the sport of canoe slalom.
Event format will be the Kahawai Paddler X, where heats of 6 paddlers race from a start line, around one or more buoys and back to a finish line adjacent to the start. Races aim to take 2-4 minutes and every paddler will compete in several races as they progress from heats through to division finals
Depending on participant numbers, there may also be a long-distance race (1-2km) option available in the afternoon.
Participants will be separated into age groups as follows:
• Year 7 girls
• Year 7 boys
• Year 8 girls
• Year 8 boys
